May 9, 2003 One very interesting day...

After work, I left Yukon heading to the area north of OKC. There weren't storms at that point, but I believed it to be the best bet within daylight range of my location. I made the mistake of getting on a dirt road, which led to further errors of more dirt roads costing me a lot of time.

After finally getting back into the real world, I gave up on the storms escaping to my northeast, and headed back to get to an intercept position for the storms further west.

I decided to move after a storm I watched develop near Crescent, OK. From near Lovell, OK. I watched the storm intensify, and develop a nice wallcloud.

It didn't produce a tornado and I moved east back to I-35 on Hwy 51 and back north toward the storm which passed near Perry, OK. With the storm getting away from me near dark, I decided to head for home. During the drive home, I received reports of a storm to the west headed toward OKC.

When I got home, I was quite surprised by the radar image of the storm about to hit us in eastern Canadian County.

The circulation was headed toward our house, and I didn't know which side of us it might miss us on until I saw the power flashes in the southern sky become power flashes to our immediate southeast then east.

The next day, Tonya and I did a non-professional damage survey to try to get a storm path. It turned out to have passed about 2200 feet to our south. (However...very minimal damage west of Morgan Road) Below is our map of the damage. The damage south and west of I-40 was determined by NWS to be non-tornado damage.

The "chase" part of the day was 225 miles. One wallcloud on the chase, and one nighttime tornado in the "chased" part at home.
