April 30, 2000 A day of frustration

We had a pretty bad chase day. This is the kind of chase day that would make me quit chasing if they were all like this one. Let me tell you how much this day sucked!

First, we met up and left Burkburnett way too late. We made a bad choice as to which area to head out to and then augmented our errors by changing the plan during the drive. Later, we ended up to far west (Seymour at 440pm) as the best upcoming action moved past us to our south. We worked our way back to the east on 114 toward Olney only to have the storm that would be producing a tornado beat us there essentially leaving us stuck on the outside not seeing anything. One cool cloud feature did appear along the drive as we approached Olney.

We had no real idea of the layout of the storms that we could not immediately see. So, in the interest in avoiding hail damage from stupid core punching, we hung out to the west or northwest of Olney and watched a few other minor storms not get it together.

As the storm cleared the area, we ventured into and south from Olney and crossed the tornado's damage path. As we realized that we had made yet another mistake and tried to get to another location, we find a roadblock where we had just traveled through. Unfortunately, this now left us no choice but to be hailed on since we could no longer avoid the storm approaching from the west.

Somehow we managed to get home that night without any further bad luck or bad decision making.
